Benefits to Staying in a Bed and Breakfast
- You can get the privacy and peace and quiet you desire. B&B tend to be more exclusive with fewer guests. They don’t often cater to families and are more popular among couples. If you’re looking for a place to spend a quiet weekend, a B&B may be your best bet.
- You’ll get more personal service. At a B&B, there are only a handful of guests, giving you a much more personal experience. Typically, your concierge is the owner and thus is invested in making sure you have a great stay.
- They are often located in out-of-the-way areas. Unlike hotels, B&Bs are often found off the beaten path. This provides you with a great opportunity to see less traveled parts of the community that you would otherwise miss.
- It’s the perfect romantic getaway. In fact, B&Bs have become so popular for couples that many cater to this romantic angle, offering special romantic packages. These may include pre-planned events or excursions that are included in your stay.
- They’re more secure. At a B&B, there are fewer people coming and going. With less going on, B&B owners tend to keep a much better eye on the hotel property than a typical hotel staff.
- You can get a taste of the local flavour and lifestyle. B&Bs are usually established and run by locals, and tend to have their own character. Even better, B&B owners often have lots of tips concerning the best things to do and see in the local area.
- They offer extra activities. Many B&Bs offer additional recreational activities in their regular packages. Depending on the location, you may be able to enjoy biking, hiking.
- You’ll encounter unexpected luxuries. B&Bs tend to offer all those special extra touches that can make your stay pampering and luxurious.

DEVRUKH MUSEUM
NEW MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS IN “DEVRUKH”
A far corner of Devrukh in the Konkan region of Maharashtra has become home to precious paintings of the Bombay School of Art. What’s more remarkable is how these works of art from the British era — now valued at Rs.4 crore — got retrieved and exhibited in the newly inaugurated fine arts museum.
The story goes thus: In order that the work of talented sons of the soil be preserved within Konkan, paintings were painstakingly collected by the 4th President of the institution, Late Shri Arun V Athalye, who was ably guided in his effort by Late Shri V S Gurjar, Some of the paintings collected by Late Shri Mulye Master were generously donated by his family to Mr. Arun Athalye for the Devrukh Shikshan Prasarak Mandal.
The paintings in this collection are rendered by artists who belonged to a tradition of painters known as 'Bombay School of Art'. These painters and artists range from the three generations of the Pestonji Family, Pestonji Bomanji, Eruksha Pestonji and Dadiseth Eruksha, the father and son duo of the Haldankars, Late V S Gurjar, Late M V Dhurandhar, Late N R Sardesai, Late Dinanath Dalal and such other eminent artists whose work spans from 1850 through 1950 and beyond.
Today, they adorn the sprawling Lakshmibai Pitre Kalasangrahalaya thanks to a struggle, at whose forefront was 88-year-old resident Vasant Pitre.
The seed for the museum was sown more than six decades ago. In order that the work of talented artists from the Konkan, Sindhudurg, Raigad, Ratnagiri belt be preserved, art teacher Yashwant Mule, artist V.S. Gurjar and art connoisseur Mr. Arun Athalye started collecting the paintings. Spending from his pocket, to raising donations, the new venture became an obsession. But the dream was not to be fulfilled anytime during their lifetime. The paintings were donated to Devrukh Shikshan Prasarak Mandal (DSPM) Trust.
“The paintings had gathered dust and were in a shambles. Around six years ago, a member of the committee illegally sold them. The process to retrieve them was lengthy and tedious,” said Shrinivas Virkar, council member of the Trust. It was then that Mr. Pitre, chairman of the Trust, got down to the job. The museum is named after his mother.
Work on the museum began about five years ago. Architect Arvind Sardal designed the building which stands on 6,000 sq.ft. of land. Mumbai-based curator Mrudula Mane was roped in. Under the guidance of museologist Sadashiv Gorakshkar, the restoration began. It was decided that the ground floor would be devoted to the Bombay School of Art painters. The second made space for contemporary artists.
Every painting offers a slice of history. Now you see a beautiful landscape of Kolhapur of the time, painted by Mr. Rahiman. Now you marvel at the earliest painting in the museum — a realistic portrait by Bomanji. Numerous, detailed human figures come alive in a small painting called “Devadarshan” in the trademark style of L.N. Taskar.
“All the paintings on the ground floor have a strong western influence. It was just the beginning of realism in the country, where painters were moving away from depicting mythology. Their brush strokes, the use of water colour were borrowed from the West. But the core subject remained Indian,” said Ms. Mane.

MESMERISING MONSOON IN KONKAN (LADIES SPECIAL)
And when the monsoon finally arrives, quite dramatically, it is accompanied by claps of thunder and streaks of lightning. The smell of wet earth is everywhere and the croaking of the frogs reaches a crescendo. Monsoon in Konkan means sudden bursts of torrential downpours which usually last for a short time, although occasionally, there are periods when it rains for hours on end. These sudden bursts are always succeeded by bright sunshine which lights up the countryside in brilliant colours.
Go for quiet walks in the hinterlands and enjoy mind-riveting sights of white-washed ancient temples resting against lush green paddy fields. The breath-taking natural wonders of Konkan have to be seen, to be truly enjoyed. Yes, Konkan in the monsoons has all the ingredients of a dreamy, misty, green vacation with peace and solitude in just the right measure.
The best time to visit the Konkan Region is the monsoon season (June to September) though the ferry services are discontinued during this time. During this time, the entire area becomes a captivating and green canvas on which nature seems to have applied its finest and best brushstrokes.

Packing Tips For The Konkan Monsoon Tour
Whoever said happiness comes with sunshine
Hasn’t danced in the rains
Monsoons can be the best time to travel in many parts of India. In Konkan, monsoons typically last from June – September end. This is when landscapes are at their greenest and freshest, roads at their cleanest and when weather is at its most pleasant temperature. With the end of summer vacations in Indian schools, tourist attractions are less crowded and good bargains can be found when travelling.
However, it can be quite irritating if you do not have the right things with you when you travel during monsoon. Here is a list of things to pack during the monsoon:
Bag: Carry a light, water-proof bag so that your things stay dry. It is also wise to purchase a plastic case for your phone, wallet and passport and ensure that electronic goods are kept securely dry in your bag.
Clothes: Wear light cotton clothes or comfortable partially synthetic clothes that can dry off quickly if you happen to get wet. Shorts or three-quarter pants are always better than full length clothes which usually get muddied in puddles or by splash-back. Avoid light colours which are prone to becoming stained. A jacket is a must have item particularly if you plan to walk a lot outside or trek. A windcheater is useful to keep you warm during the rains, one without lining is better than one with as most parts of Konkan are quite warm once it stops raining. If you plan to go to a hill-station which is cooler and where it rains quite heavily, a jacket with a warm lining would also be useful.
Umbrella: Generally to just walk around cities, an umbrella should work just fine to keep you relatively dry. Convenient folding umbrellas are easy to carry and do not take up much space.
Shoes: Closed water-proof shoes are essential to keep your feet clean. Tall boots or even gum-boots are good but it can get hot wearing them. Avoid wearing open rubber slippers or sandals that will only dirty your feet. Wearing sneakers or canvas shoes is also a bad idea as they take a long time to dry when they get wet.
Mosquito Repellent or Nets: The monsoon attracts plenty of mosquitoes and it is best to prevent yourself from being bitten so that you don’t get sick. Mosquito borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are very dangerous, particularly during monsoon. It is therefore important to keep repelling mosquitoes using tropical strength repellent. If you are able to set one up easily, a mosquito net is also worthwhile for when you sleep.
Food and Water: Food tends to spoil or get moist easily in the monsoons, so it is worthwhile carrying small airtight containers if you want to pack food. Water can also be contaminated in this season, and it is safest to buy packaged water that is widely available throughout India.
Mats or Newspapers: If you plan to have picnics whilst on the road, it is useful to carry dry mats or plastic sheets to spread out on wet surfaces. These may also be useful if you have long waits at train or bus stations.
Sunblock: You can still get sunburnt so make sure you always use sunblock even if it is raining.

Precautions For Monsoon Tourism In Konkan
Monsoon season is the best season when we consider other seasons of the Konkan Sector. Many
tourist spot lovers would like to get into tourist trips during this season. But sadly the enjoyment turns into danger in some cases. This article is related to the causes and precautions on tourism in monsoon.
After the enervating heat of the early summer, Konkan's monsoon breathes new life into the parched and dusty landscape. While most travellers have typically avoided Konkan during the wet season, some are beginning to appreciate the unique thrills offered by the Konkan monsoon. From kids splashing in puddles, to entire crowds huddled beneath shared umbrellas, to rickshaws wading through rivers that were once roads, monsoon season can be beautiful and festive. When planning your India travel dates, think twice before avoiding this magical season.
Tourism is something that makes your mind happy and fresh. We would all like to get into trips to tourist spots during stress. But sadly some of these tourism ventures turn into danger due to lack of precautions and knowledge about hidden dangers. The monsoon season in Konkan is the best season for tourism. Many places in Konkan turn beautiful in this period. The presence of water in backwaters, sea and waterfalls make monsoon favourite for tourists. But we should take care as dangers are hidden in these journey. This article is just a small information regarding the precautions needed and causes while we conduct a tour to favourite spots.
The data available show that monsoon season is favourite for tourist and other data make us shocked too. It is the same season which takes away the life of many tourists. The enjoyment places sometimes turns out to be danger zones due to lack of care. Tourism trips in monsoon season are mainly in two types. Indian youth like to enjoy life in tourist spots and so a big gang of youth would become freedom lovers in this season. In other case families would like to enjoy the beauty of waterfalls in monsoon. Both these trips are essential in our life as they cherish good memories. But the precaution should be also ready. Especially in the case of youth. They would like to enjoy a lot and the lack of knowledge and care regarding dangers would always turn out into disasters. The data related to accident during monsoon at tourist spots also show the same. The youngsters are the most dangerous species in monsoon. Konkan is well known for monsoon beauty. But the trips should be well planned and conducted. That can only make the magical monsoon of Konkan worthy. It can be see that many accidents was due to the wishes of children to enjoy. We should be ready to avoid such wishes of children even if they insist as it is matter of life.
Trips to water falls in Konkan is enjoyed by most. The natural beauty of waterfalls and the freshness of such tourist spots make the trips cherishing memories. The waterfalls with little drops shattering is one of the experiences that none of us should ever miss. In monsoon the entry of water to these falls become more. The rivers related to the waterfalls. The dams everything gets filled with water and the place turns out to be the heaven in earth. But sometimes the hell turns out in the same place. The main reason is a discourage to boards. We can see on the way and at the spots many boards giving us highlight about the dangers hidden in that place. Especially the boards asking to leave out entry to rivers. The rivers would be in anger mood in monsoon. Many would like to take a bath in such rivers and that is the biggest danger hidden. Many place selected are not at all suitable and would be having hidden problems. For example at a spot the river would seem to be silent but the underwater currents would be large and occasional people cannot find that too. They would get into the river for a simple bath but the underwater currents and waves would put them in danger. It would be easy to say that we can escape if we know swimming but at that time during the strong underwater currents even the best swimmer can't escape. So be careful about the boards that deny entry to water. It is better to avoid such entries to river when we go to tourist spots. Enjoy the natural beauty in its complete format.
Some would like to go to forest in more deep grounds. The forest would be the place of core animals. If we deny the boards regarding the entry of wild animals it would later become cause of death. We should be well aware that wild animals are not that easy to follow an escape. Monsoon season is well known and also animal richness in monsoon forest too. So always be careful about the wild animals especially in night. Never turn way from the boards and be ready with precaution like access to help from forest department etc. Never try to tease the wild animals and that would make them more prompted t attack.
Also try to avoid alcohol consumption when we look for the picnic spots. The rash driving and the absence of mind would lead to more danger. It can be well understood that alcohol is the main reason that leads to problems at tourist spots. So it is better to avoid the alcohol and enjoy nature and the beauty in Konkan with a fresh mind, not with an addicted mind.
Trips to backwaters and sea is other mode of enjoyment. But we are well aware about the problem through tsunami and Boat tragedies. So when we plan such trips we should be well prepared. Enjoyment should never turn into death. The best way to be happy and enjoy in a boat ride would be silent nature. We should confirm that the boat is well secured and it has the escape accessories within it. Also avoid the entry to sea without proper idea. Never avoid the boards that deny entry to sea in some places. The tragedies taking place now are just some that can show the seriousness of this issue. The short waves of sea would seem small but the large waves can always bring in danger. They appear any time even after short waves. Don't try to jump over waves. It is just a guess that jump would help. But the strong waves can take you away in jump too. It is better to stay away. The power of waves sometimes take away the mind too. It take away the health soon that loss conscious. It happens easily with small waves in case of children. So always be careful about the power of sea in monsoon. It is sure that the sea is powerful in monsoon but it is beautiful too.
The article does not ask you stay away from tourist spots. It just asks to take some precaution so the monsoon of India would become the best ever in world. Enjoy the nature beauty of monsoon with ease and silence. Especially take a leave form alcohol in trips. That is the best way to enjoy the trips. This article is just an initiative to avoid the tragedies that are going on at the tourist spots during monsoon in India. Enjoy the beauty of monsoon but not with your life and let this poem enhance the ideas of this article to you.
