TEMPLES IN RATNAGIRI - PAWAS

kanchan athalye | Wednesday, November 03, 2010 | Best Blogger Tips

Besides its natural beauty and serenity, Pawas achieved prominence when Swami Swaroopanand (a spiritual leader who influenced an entire generation of Maharashtrians) had made it his abode. The place where he used to reside is now converted into an ashram. A visit there is still like a journey through time. Following the great saint Dnyaneshwari tradition Swami Swaroopanand too tried to spread his teachings in the cannon people. Now due to Swami Swaropanandas work Pawas has become a major place of tourist attraction. He made a new big family of devotees all over Maharashtra by chanting the Mantra 'Om Ram Krishna Hari'. He stayed here for a period of 40 years. Pawas is now one of the important holy places of Konkan. Samadhi of Swami Swaroopanand is there in the Pawas & also temple has been built for his devotees. The special variety of eatables of Konkan like 'Fanaspoli', Ambapoli, Amras & other different Konkani items are available to the tourists at a very reasonable rate. Near Swaroopanandas Samadhi on the Avala tree lord Ganesh Statue has appeared. People definately visit this place & also the house 'Anant Niwas' where Swami Swaroopananda stayed. It is 20 km. from Ratnagiri.

kanchan athalye | Tuesday, November 02, 2010 | Best Blogger Tips

KOKAN MYTH

kanchan athalye | Tuesday, November 02, 2010 | Best Blogger Tips
The Most Famous Legend Associated With Konkan, Is That Of The Mythicalsage Parashuram (The Sixth Incarnation Of Lord Vishnu), Who Several Thousand Years Ago Created The Entire Stretch Of Konkan Coast By Ordering The Seas To Recede. An Interesting Sidelight In This Legendary Origin Of Konkan Is That Lord Parashuram Is Supposed To Have Shot An Arrow From The Top Of The Western Ghats Into The Sea To Command The Sea God To Withdraw Till The Place Where The Arrow Fell And Claimed That Land To Be His Kingdom. The Place Where The Arrow Landed Was Called Bannali (In Sanskrit or'where The Arrow Landed'; Bann: Arrow, Ali: Village), Or Today'sbenaulim.Parashuram Arrived In The New Abode With Other Sara Swat Brahmins And Sages In Order To Perform The Yadnya And Other Rituals. These Brahmin Families Of Dashgotras From Panchgoudas Of Trihotrapura In Northern India Came Along With Their Family Deities And Settled Themselves In This Land Of Gomantak Or The Land Of The Gods As It Came To Be Known Hereafter.Another Legend, Less Well Known, States That The Coastal Area Of Konkan Enchanted Lord Krishna, Who Was Charmed By The Beautiful Ladies Bathing In The Area. The Ladies In Turn, Were So Taken Up By The Melodious Music Coming From His Flute, That They Kept Dancing Forgetting Their Daily Chores. Lord Krishna, Then Named The Landgovapuri After The Cows (Gov) Belonging To The Locals. The History Of The Sacred Land Of Gomantak, 'Land Of The Gods' Is Well Described In Sahyadri Khand Of Skandha Purana, The Ancient Text Of Hindu Religion. According To This Story Narrated In The Chapter Shantiparva Of Mahabharata, A Brahmin From The Sara Swat Family,Parashuram, Annihilated The Entire Community Of The Warrior Tribekshatriyas And Gifted The Conquered Land To A Sage Named Kashyapmuni.Unfortunately, The Kshatriya Annihilation Meant That The Land Was Leftunadministered And Fell Into Anarchy And Chaos. The Worried Sagekashyapmuni, Requested Parashuram To Leave The Area And Settle Elsewhere. Parashuram Came South And Reclaimed New Land By Ordering The Sea To Recede And Give Up The Coastal Land. This Land Known As"Aparant" Or "Shurparak" Is Spread Between The Sahyadri Mountains And Sindhusagar. The First Wave Of Brahmins To Settle In Goa And Konkan, Were Called Saraswats Because Of Their Origins From The Banks Of The River Saraswati, An Ancient River That Existed In Vedic Times. The Subsequent Drying Up Of The River Caused Large Scale Migration Of Brahmins To All Corners Of India.A Group Of Ninety-Six Families, Known Today As Gaud Saraswats, Settledalong The Konkan Coast Around 1000 Bc. Of These, Sixty-Six Families Took Up Residence In The Southern Half In Today's Salcete Taluka, Which Derives Its Name From The Sanskrit Word "Sassast" Meaning The Number 66.The Other Thirty Families Settled In The Northern Area In Today's Tiswadi Taluka, Which Derives Its Name From The Sanskrit Word For The Number 30. The Saraswat Brahmins Worked In Partnership With The Local Indigenous People, The Kunbi Tribals Who Still Exist Today. Around Theyear 740 Ad, The Brahmins Established Their First Matha (Religiouscentre Of Learning) At Kushasthali (Present Day Cortalim) .They Initially Settled At Mathagram (Margao), Kushasthal (Cortalim)And Kardalinagar (Keloshi). The Main Deities Which Also Came Alongwith Them Were Mangirish, Mahadeo, Mahalaxmi, Mahalsa, Shantadurga,Nagesh, Saptakoteshwar Besides Many Others. According To Local Legend,The Ash Found At Harmal Beach In Pernem Taluka Is Cited As The Ash Of The Yadnya Or Holy Ritual Performed In Goa.Today A Temple Of Parashuram Exists In Painguinim Village Of Canacona Taluka In South Goa And In Chiplun Also. There Is No Concrete Proof To Determine The Exact Date Of The Arrival Of Saraswats Or Parashuramain The Area, Nor Is It Conclusively Proved That Saraswats Or Other Aryans Were The First To Arrive In Konkan.Even If The Legends Are Considered As Only Myths, The Residence Of Saraswat Brahmins In Goa Since Ancient Times Along With Their Family Deities Is An Undeniable Fact. And Most Probably They Arrived In Goa Under The Leadership Of A Towering Personality Named Parashuram.

MATERIAL TO MAKE RANGOLI

kanchan athalye | Monday, November 01, 2010 | Best Blogger Tips
We have a large variety of alternative that can used to make Rangoli designs.
You can also experiment and mix and match materials after all creative mind never exhaust. These materials may be coloured as per need.

Rangoli colours
Readily available in the market.

Marble dust.
Gives good result, but very heavy to carry in bulk.

Saw dust
Sawdust is easier to handle. Even floats on water.

Coloured rice
Can be used as it is or grinded for fine texture .You can also colour rice at home using food colours. Wet the food colour powder with a few drops of water and rub the rice in it till it is uniformly coloured. Do not forget to wear gloves to protect your hands from getting coloured. Dry the rice on paper, in shade before use. (Caution: If the rice is not completely dry it may leave coloured stains on the floor.)

Coloured Suzi/rawa/cream of wheat
Nice grains(harder than saw dust) easy to spread.. but doesn’t mix too well with color.. Bouncier than color- thus may give a slightly whitish haze.. But good part is it is hygroscopic. If you want, the it to stay longer than a day this is the medium to use

Petals
Rose petals, marigold petals, small purple paper flowers, finely cut greens-grass/ leaves-even methi leaves...just fill up the large designs. Use strings of marigold and if you like strings of kanakambara/ jasmine flowers to outline

Fabric or poster colour mixed with chalk powder
Mix a small quantity of colour with chalk powder. Apply it with brush on the floor. It just looks like painting on floor ….not a traditional form of Rangoli , but it is scores over as it is very easy and is relatively permanent in nature

Coloured stones
Use this only for big and abstract Rangolis as finesse is not possible with such materials

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR RANGOLI DRAWING

kanchan athalye | Monday, November 01, 2010 | Best Blogger Tips

To fill colour you can use mehindi cones. This will help to fill the colour more accurately and easily.

You may create spaces within the rangoli design to place diyas. You could also use flower petals of different colours (golden marigolds, bright red roses) to add that extra dimension to your design.

Special floating candles are also available in the market. Float them in big containers of water along with flower petals.

If you are making rangoli design with edible material spray some pesticides near rangoli so that the ants don’t attack your work.

You can put a glass of appropriate size to put over the frame is essential to prevent damage as well as it will increase the glaze of Your Kolam.

Make white outlines to enhance the design.

You can also make a stencil of Rangoli. For this take a cardboard and draw the design you want to make, and cut out the design .So any time you want to make that design just sprinkle colour on the cardboard and the design is ready.

Do not use glue to make the rangoli permanent. That will only spoil it.

kanchan athalye | Monday, November 01, 2010 | Best Blogger Tips
