Given below are some of the waterfalls in Sindhudurg District as tourist places of interest. 

Amboli : 1 km from Amboli, the falls is well known for its fresh and pleasing environs.

Napne : 15 km from Vaibhavwadi. Located at Sherpe village in Vaibhavwadi Taluka this waterfall is known as Swimmers delight. A swim in its cool pool is very safe and refreshing. Here one can easily explore the secret of cascading water by reaching close to the spot from where water emerges from the top in the form of bubbles through hard and compact rocks. The area around the waterfall is also a natural habitat for the rare species of birds, specially for the Hornbills.

Vyagreshwar : 30 km from Tarale(which is on Mumbai-Goa highway). From Vyagreshwar temple there is a track to go to the waterfall. One has to go on foot to reach there. To get the majestic scene of the waterfall, it is necessary to walk carefully because the path is very narrow. If it is not possible to reach descending water one can take pleasure of bathing in the water of naturally formed Kund but courageous youths can’t control themselves from going beneath the fall. Though the way is slippery and one has to be very careful, it is indescribable thrilling experience.

Savdav : 10 km from Kankavali town. This is monsoon waterfall. This is very attractive. It is very safe & seasonal tourist spot.

Nagartas : 50 km from Kankavli town, in the amboli ghat or 100km from Kolhapur. For waterfall lovers this roaring beauty is just 9 kms. away. When you arrive at this fall walk cautiously at the edge of the drop off. Stand on the erected platform for viewers and let your eyes follow the sound of falling water into the cavity.

The Hiranyakeshi river originates from mountain rock and flows down from this place. You can spend hours angling for fish in its proceedings stream. 5.5 Km away from Amboli.
Nangartas Water Fall, Amboli: For waterfall lovers this roaring beauty is just 9 kms. away. When you arrive at this fall walk cautiously at the edge of the drop off. Stand on the erected platform for viewers and let your eyes follow the sound of falling water into the cavity.

Sawantwadi Palace: Sawantwadi was ruled by Khemsawant and this beautiful palace was built by King Khemsawant- Bhosle(3rd) in 1800 A.D., where tourist can see ‘Ganjifa’ traditional art of paintng which is more than 300 yrs. Old. Lake (Moti Talav) in front of the palace is spot for boating. The palace was built by Khem Sawant Bhosale ruler of princely state Sunderwadi during 1755-1803. Entry gate (Lester gate) was built in 1895.

Shilpgram, Sawantwadi & Wooden Toys: Wooden Toys : Toys are made from “Pangera” tree, famous for its lightness. These colourful toys is an imported traditional art at Chitarali. These toys are very famous in all over Maharashtra.

The Magic of the Monsoons

Millions of tourists visit Konkan every year, a majority of them making the trip during the peak season in winter from October to January. Quite a few visit Konkan during the summer around the month of May. But they seldom make the trip when Konkan is at its most beautiful — during the monsoons. The rainy season (monsoons) in Konkan is simply a magical experience.

The real beauty and grandeur of Konkan is at its height during the rainy season when it offers you a plethora of unique experiences. The rivers joyfully overflow with their rushing streams, the trees dance to the tune of the winds, the mountains and the fields cover themselves with a verdant green carpet ready to welcome you to a land of eternal beauty.
In early June, after the sweltering summer heat of the summer months, the monsoon gives Konkan the first signal of its imminent arrival. Ominous grey clouds gather over the horizon, the blue skies disappear and the thunder rumbles in the distance sounding like a typical Konkan drum beat. Frogs croak their welcome urging Lord Varuna (the God of Rain) to hurry.

And when the monsoon finally arrives, quite dramatically, it is accompanied by claps of thunder and streaks of lightning. The smell of wet earth is everywhere and the croaking of the frogs reaches a crescendo. Monsoon in Konkan means sudden bursts of torrential downpours which usually last for a short time, although occasionally, there are periods when it rains for hours on end. These sudden bursts are always succeeded by bright sunshine which lights up the countryside in brilliant colors.

Soon the Konkan landscape undergoes a complete transformation as if being painted in various shades of green. Hills turn coy and shroud themselves with misty veils, while their luxuriant green covering of trees greets the storm clouds and the undergrowth grows rapidly. The rice fields are emerald green with a deep green fringe of palm trees and an even deeper green of other smaller trees. This colorful canvas of a rhapsody in green is in sharp contrast to the dark cloudy grey of the skies.
The rivers and estuaries which criss-cross Konkan, are swollen with rainwater, flowing with renewed gusto giving up their usual shades of blue-green to turn a deep orange-yellow. The Arabian Sea all along the Konkan coastline is not to be outdone. Angry and active, it puts on a grand show for the occasion, roaring and creating huge waves which pound the sandy beaches.
Swimming in the sea at this time of the year is out of the question as the sea is very turbulent and the waves treacherous. But try walking barefoot along the beach and listen to the roar of the ocean and feel the rain and the salt spray splash on your face. It is a great feeling.

Konkan in the rains is a serene and peaceful refuge for those seeking respite from the concrete jungles of the urban world. The best thing you can do is sit out on a verandah and watch the world pass by while the hours waft into wonderful, lazy, rain-soaked days.

If relaxing in the cozy ambience of your room is not your idea of fun, then there are a plethora of outdoor activities for the adventurous at heart. Fish along the riverside, go crab hunting or if you hanker for some real excitement, then trekking is the ultimate experience.

VETOBA TEMPLE

It is a very ancient Temple in Aravali, near Vengurla. It is a Temple of Lord Vetoba, who is deity of Aravali people. The Temple is surrounded by coconut plantation. Also farming is done in Temple vicinity which adds greenery to the surrounding area of the Temple.

Local believes that Lord Vetoba wear Kolhapuri big chappals and roam in the village at night and these Lord's footwares are kept in the Temple which are amazing and not seen before.

PILGRIMAGE TOURISM IN SINDHUDURG DISTRICT

Pilgrimage tourism in Sindhudurg district is an enriching and fulfilling experience. There are a number of temples located here where the tourists can go for pilgrimage purposes. Most temples hare also have historical worth due to the time of their construction, such as the Kunkeshwar temple which was built in 1100 AD by the Yadava rulers. The idol of the Redi Ganapati, found in the Redi village, is said to have been constructed by the Pandavas during their reign. Rituals and traditional rites have been kept intact in these temples, such as the offering of the Otti to Shree Bharadi Devi in Angnewadi. Mentioned below are the various places of pilgrimage tourism in Sindhudurg District.

Kunkeshwar Temple:
It is famous both as a picturesque holiday resort and a religious place. The elaborately carved Kunkeshwar Temple was built around 1100 AD, by the Yadava rulers. Visited frequently by Chatrapati Shivaji, the temple is considered as a fine example of contemporary sculpture. Kunkeshwar is also renowned for its coconut, palm and mango plantations and a variety of seafood. Southwards along the coast, beyond the creek at Mumbri, is a lovely walk all along the rocky slopes. It ends at the temple of Kunkeshwar, a lonely stretch of sand that simply sparkles in the sunlight. The temple can be approached by the road that branches off at Jamsande.

Rameshwar Temple (Achara):
Lord Rameshwar is the tutelary deity of Achara village. A unique tradition observed here is that once in five years, the village seeks the divine verdict of Lord Rameshwar and the occasion called `Gavpalne` takes place. In this ritual, all the villagers and their domesticated animals have to reside outside the village for nearly three days. The belief is that the villager`s life will be protected from all risks by Lord Rameshwar`s mercy. The temple offers devotees a 10 room residency in its spacious courtyard which resembles the popular temples in Goa.

Angnewadi (Shree Bharadi Devi):
Goddess Bharadidevi of Angnewadi village is renowned all over. It is believed that her image has occurred in a self existent rock form. The Goddess is said to fulfil the wishes of any person who asks for her favour. Once in a year devotees from Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka come together in a village for pilgrimage. According to tradition, the Goddess is offered `Otti` (Coconut and Blouse Piece). According to ritual, the devi is adorned with a mask, saree and ornaments, and the offering of Otti commences after this and it is continued throughout the day of the fair. The local people who are entitled to honour and respect come and sit together in a temple on a Dali (Mat Made up ofBamboo) and decide a day of for holding a fair. The women from different households cook food after their bath, and the food is offered as Prasad to the Devi. This Prasad is called Tat Lagne. The prasad is then distributed among the pilgrims who show their presence in thousands during the fair day.

Redi Ganapati (Redi Village):
This place is situated to the southwest of Sawantwadi. Around 18 years ago, a local person called Sadashiv Kambli visualised the sculpture of Lord Ganesha in his dreams. Following this he persisted in his search of the idol for a long time till at last he found it along the seashore. After survey, it has become evident that the sculpture was made by the Pandavas during the time of their rule. The idol is about 6 feet in height and 4 feet wide, and the entire idol was discovered un-destroyed and as a whole.

Jay Ganesh Temple:
Situated at Malvan Jay Ganesh temple is now on a ‘must see’ list of tourists. The temple is built by Shri Jayantrao Salgaonkar, an astrologer of repute and creator of very popular almanac ‘Kalnirnay’. Situated in Medha locality of Malvan on ancestral family land of Salgaonkars, the temple has been constructed as per the holy principles of temple architecture in India. Shri Jayantrao personally supervised the construction. The presiding deity in the temple is Lord Ganesha, much revered Elephant God of Maharashtra. The idol is of pure gold. This main idol in the sanctum sanctorum is in the traditional pose with Riddhi- Siddhi (consorts of Lord) on both sides. Siddhi is holding Dhol (Indian traditional percussion instrument) and sword in her hand while Riddhi has pen and paper in her hands. The hall has eight idols of Ganesh carved in the ceiling. One gets a very comfortable feeling of Lord Ganesh looking benevolently from all the eight directions at his disciple. The interior of the temple is very rich and has used soothing colors. A five-day annual festival of Ganesh Jayanti is celebrated on 4th Day of Magh (month in Hindu Calendar). This day is also the anniversary day of the temple. The speciality of this temple’s architecture can be seen on the early morning of Makar Sankranti (14th or 15th of January). On this day the early sunrays fall directly on the idol and one can see the glittering and shining Ganesha bathed in sunlight. Jayantrao Salgaonkar has named this Ganesha as Jay Ganesha so that the Ganesha may bestow ‘Jay’ (success) on his disciples.
